CSP-550 STAINLESS STEEL PANEL SYSTEM

 

 

 

PART 1 – GENERAL

 

1.1              RELATED DOCUMENTS

 

A.                 The requirements of the GENERAL CONDITIONS, SUPPLEMENTARY CONDITIONS, and DIVISION I, GENERAL REQUIRMENTS, apply to the work of this SECTION.

 

1.2              SCOPE OF WORK

 

Furnish all labor, materials, equipment, and services necessary for the installation of a preformed metal wall panel system, complete and weather tight.  Work shall include but not be limited to panels, stiffeners, fasteners, and secondary air/moisture barrier required for a complete installation of panels to the support system provided for this scope of work.

 

1.3              WORK SPECIFIED IN THIS SECTION

 

A.                 Furnish and install a preformed, prefinished metal wall panel system

B.                 Secondary air/moisture barrier and accessory items such as panel subgirt system, clips, flashings, sealants, and gaskets.

1.5              METAL PANEL SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

 

A.                 The preformed metal panel system, complete with required stiffeners, weather seals, and secondary moisture/vapor barrier, shall meet the specified requirements for air infiltration, water penetration, seismic, and structural performance.

B.                 The metal panels shall be hard fastened so the panels are secure, yet able to accommodate seismic and thermal movement without buckling or causing undue stress on panel fasteners

C.                 Panel system joints shall be formed aluminum plate with tight radius corners as specified, welded and ground smooth.  All joints shall be sealed with silicone sealant and extruded black silicone gasket embedded into sealant.

 

 

1.6              DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

 

A.                 Preformed metal wall panel system shall meet or exceed all of the following minimum performance standards identified within this Section.

B.                 Metal panel system shall be designed by manufacturer so that attachment allows panels to successfully accommodate seismic and thermal movement without causing “oil-canning”, undue stress on fasteners, or failure of weather seals.

C.                 Structural Performance:  Maximum allowable deflection of the panel system shall be L/120.  Mid-spans may deflect beyond but shall return to original plane when loads are removed

D.                 Air Infiltration:  Air infiltration of panel system shall not exceed 0.06 cfm/sq.ft. when tested under static pressure of 6.24 PSF.

E.                  Water Penetration:  Panel system shall have no uncontrolled water penetration through panel system when tested at a static pressure of 12 PSF.

 

1.7              QUALITY ASSURANCE

 

A.                 Manufacturer Qualifications:  Manufacturer shall have a minimum of (5) years experience in the design and manufacturing of preformed metal wall panel systems and shall have a minimum of (3) projects of similar size and scope of this project, utilizing this type of stainless steel panel system.

B.                 Single Source Quality Control:  Metal panel system manufacturer shall provide all design, engineering, panel fabrication, welding, and assembly of panel system in manufacturing facility.

C.                 Installer Qualifications:  Installer shall have a minimum of (5) years experience in the installation of the specified panel system type, and shall be an authorized installer of the preformed metal panel system manufacturer.

D.                 Metal Panel System Tolerances:

a.       Maximum panel bow shall not exceed 2% of panel dimensions in width or length, with an overall maximum tolerance of .240” within panel face

b.      Face of panel shall not vary in plane to any adjacent panel greater that 1/16”

c.       Brake form radius of exposed panel edges to be maximum of .125”

E.      Stainless Steel Finish Mock-Up:

a.       Provide coil end-cuts from each coil of material to be supplied for fabrication and mount them for viewing in location as directed by Architect

b.      Provide (2) full size panels as selected by Architect for review of finish, flatness of panels, and fabrication technique.  These panels to remain in secure location at jobsite to serve as standard for quality review purposes.

 

 

 

1.8              SUBMITTALS

 

A.                 Manufacturer’s Certification:  Submit written certification that metal panel system manufacturer has a minimum of (5) years experience in the design, engineering, and manufacturing of the type of panel system specified.  Submit (3) reference projects of similar size and scope utilizing the specified type of panel system.

B.                 Samples:  Submit physical samples as follows

a.       (4) 12” square panels mounted with specified system attachments, specified brake formed/welded corners, and silicone sealant with extruded silicone gasket in joints

b.      (2) 12” square panel samples of specified metal thickness with formed corners to maximum radius specified.

c.       (6) copies for manufacturer recommendations for cleaning and maintenance of stainless steel finish.

d.      (6) 12” samples of extruded silicone gasket

e.       (6) standard color charts for specified silicone sealant manufacturer

f.        (6) 12” square samples of specified secondary air/moisture barrier

 

C.                 Shop Drawings:  Submit complete metal panel system shop drawings with keyed plans, elevations, and sections.  Specific details shall be included for all panel conditions and all interfaces with all other exterior wall systems.  Included coordinated details from shop drawings for other exterior wall systems.  Drawings shall also indicate method of attachment, location of internal stiffeners and weather seals, and drainage method for secondary air/moisture vapor barrier.

D.                 Structural Calculations:  Submit structural calculations for the design and performance of the metal panel system, including specified and building code windloads, deflections, in-place stresses, and capacity of fasteners.  Calculations and submittal drawings shall be stamped by a Professional Engineer licensed in the State Of California.

E.                  Sealant Adhesion Testing:  Submit sealant manufacturer’s adhesion test results and recommendations for surface preparation to KYNAR paint finish and extruded silicone gasket.

 

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

 

2.1              ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS:

 

A.        CSP-550 Stainless Steel Panel System by CSP Architectural Metals, utilizing embossed stainless steel manufactured by Nisshin Steel Company, stainless steel finish to be _______________________.

B.         Additional manufacturers may be submitted for prior approval before the bid date.  At the sole discretion of the Architect, systems may be approved if they satisfy all of the requirements of the Design and Performance Criteria and Quality Assurance sections of this specification.

2.2              MATERIALS:

 

A.                 Stainless Steel Panels:  Custom fabricate panels from 16 gauge embossed stainless steel.  Fabrication shall include shearing, punching, and forming of panels to sizes indicated on approved shop drawings.  Brake formed flanges shall be formed to provide maximum .125” radius.  Corners shall be tight seams with internal sealant applied for a weather tight assembly.

B.                 Radiused Panels:  Where indicated on drawings provide radiused embossed stainless steel panels rolled to specified radius with formed returns and flanges indicated on drawings and required for attachment to support system.

C.                 Metal Panel Subgirt System:  Provide 16 gauge galvanized “Z” profile as subgirt system for panel attachment.  Z profile shall be formed to thickness to eliminate penetration of panel fasteners through air/moisture barrier.  Z profile shall be sealed to air/moisture barrier with continuous extruded polyisobutylene tape.

D.                 Fasteners:  Subgirt and panel fasteners shall be ELCO Drillflex with stalgard finish.  Size and spacing shall be as required by structural calculations.  ¼” stainless steel alignment pins with through-bolt attachment to panels shall be installed as required by structural calculations.

E.                  Secondary Air/Moisture Barrier:  RUFCO 800, 2-ply cross-laminated, polyethylene sheet.  Sheet width shall be minimum 48” and seams shall overlap a minimum of 12” and be sealed with bead of silicone sealant.

F.                  Weather seals:  Provide silicone sealant at all panel-to-panel joints, panel system perimeter joints, and internal panel corner seals.  Sealant shall be Dow Corning 795 silicone sealant.  Install silicone sealant in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, including proper joint backing, and any specific surface preparation recommendations.  Sealant manufacturer shall provide standard (20) year warranty. 

G.                 Extruded Silicone Gasket:  Provide extruded 100% silicone polymer gasket to be embedded into silicone joint sealant prior to curing as detailed in drawings.

 

 

PART 3 – EXECUTION

 

3.1              FABRICATION

 

A.                 Fabricate panels to sizes and configurations as indicated on drawings.  All panel joints shall occur exactly where indicated on drawings.

B.                 Panels shall be sheared and formed, with corners welded and ground smooth.

C.                 Panel stiffeners required for flatness and deflection shall be applied to the panel with structural silicone and compatible glazing tape.

D.                 Where possible, apply attachment clips and alignment pins in manufacturer’s facility.

 

 

 

3.2              INSTALLATION

 

A.                 Panel system installer shall be authorized by the metal panel system manufacturer and familiar with the specific details required for this project.

B.                 Provide at least (1) person to be present at all times who is capable of providing layout for the metal panel system.   Notify Contractor of any dimensional discrepancies that may affect panel system installation.

C.                 Install metal panel system in accordance with the approved shop drawings for the project.

D.                 Fabrication of metal panels outside the manufacturer’s facility is not permitted.

E.                  Secondary air/moisture barrier shall be applied to sheathing over metal studs, with seams lapped a minimum of 12” and sealed with bead of silicone sealant. 

F.                  Install “Z” subgirt system to support system with continuous extruded tape as a seal between subgirt and air/moisture barrier.

G.                 Install panel system to subgirt system with specified fasteners and within specified tolerances for joinery, level, and plumb.

a.       Maximum offset from true alignment of adjacent panels installed butting or in line shall by 1/16”.

b.      Panel to panel joints shall not vary greater than 1/16” of the joint size indicated on drawings.

H.                 Install silicone sealant with proper joint backing.  Upon installation, embed extruded silicone gasket into uncured silicone sealant.  Recess silicone gasket to depth indicated on drawings.  Miter gasket at panel corners and butt tight at 4-way intersections.
